KATY : The new restaurant in Katy, Kurry Walah, owned and operated by Chef Nirman Shah, a graduate of Indian Hotel Management (IHM), Ahmedabad has become the talk of the town. Before arriving in US, shah earned accolades working as Chief Chef at famous Rambagh Palace Hotel in Jaipur, a former residence of Maharaja of Jaipur and now a luxury Taj Palace Hotel. He migrated to US landing in New Jersey in 1998. While in Jersey,  he designed, developed and introduced many new food concepts like “Bombay Pav”, “Bombay Food Corner”, and “Food from Hyderabad”. These gained so much popularity that he started serving these meals to many eating joints/small restaurants as a wholesaler. He also owned his own restaurant in NJ before embarking to settle down in Houston. He is also the pioneer of starting the Hot Breads chain in US, the first being in NJ.

When questioned “Why Houston”, he said, it was not a very easy decision. It took him almost eight months to decide between Dallas and Houston. Finally, he chose Katy for its large Indian food loving South Asian and British congregation. The Kurry Walah is located on south Mason road, in the heart of the city. If you are wondering why the “K” in the “Kurry”, its because of its location in Katy. The restaurant has an inside seating capacity of thirty six to forty people and it can accommodate up to fifty people including an outside open seating area.

They prepare their own spices, which are grinded fresh at the restaurant. They serve Halal meat. Apart from a rich range of starters and “Chaat”, his specialties include Hyderabadi, Indo-Chinese, North-Indian and Sea Food. “Biryanis? You name it and we have it – Veg, Egg, Chicken, Lamb and Goat Biryani.” Says Chef Nirman. The inquisitive me asked him, the key reasons for the amazing tastes that he has to offer and he was nice enough to share the secret. Chef Nirman smiled and explained, he uses only pure Desi Ghee in his cooking and does not use Soda in any of the food items. No doubt, the food tastes just like home cooked food.

The saying goes “If you have visited Kurry Walah and not tasted Chicken 65 you have really missed something”. They serve Gujarati food on order. In fact Chef Nirman is ready to cook any item upon request. This small anecdote will vouch for it. During the interview with him, an old couple walked in and asked the waiting staff if they could be served something without garlic and onion. Chef Nirman was quick to his feet and in a jiffy prepared few items without using garlic, onion and ginger, much to the delight of the satisfied customers. Now that’s some service.

Buffet is served on Saturday and Sundays only, and the menu consists of more than 20 items, which are very reasonably priced. Restaurant timings are Sunday to Thursdays, for lunch, 11.00am to 2.30 pm and for dinner, 5.00 pm to 9.30 pm, and Friday and Saturday its open till 10 pm. Kurry Walah is  closed on Tuesdays.

Kurry Walah is located at 1830  S. Mason Rd., Suite # 165, Katy, TX 77450. For catering and more details, call Chef Nirman Shah  at 832-437-3800 or email info@kurrywalah.com or visit www. kurrywalah.com.

Got very sick eating buffet 3/17/13. Think the mango custard, very good by the way, was not kept at proper temp.

couldn’t be more disappointed in the customer service… we went in with a coupon from restaurant.com and the only way they would accept it was with an additional 18% gratuity.. an absolute joke and we are not impressed
