Facts about the organization & event:

Shunya is a Houston-based non-profit theatre troupe, currently in its eleventh season, and dedicated to providing a voice to the South Asian American experience through the visual and performing arts.

The Jungle Book, is Shunya’s second ever youth production.  It is a musical, with live music, and choreographed dance sequences and tells the tale of Mowgli, the boy, who is raised in the jungle by a pack of wolves.

Mowgli is a human boy raised by wolves and tutored in political philosophy by a panther and a bear.  He is lured by anarchist monkeys and threatened by human hunters.  Is Mowgli a man, a wolf, or a reflection of the tiger who wants to destroy him?  On stage, Kipling’s metaphor becomes an uncommon and uncomfortable reality.

What makes Shunya’s production of this Kipling classic unique is the collaboration that puts the text and poetry into motion through live music and dance.  Shunya is one of the few theatre companies in Houston that consistently composes original music, integrating eastern and western instrumentation.  Our collaboration with dance choreographers Tina and Kiron Kumar, from Infused Performing Arts, further elevates the poetic texture of the performances.

The Jungle Book brings together artists of many ages and cultures.  Teenagers, adults, brown folk, white people, and creatures that lurk in the in-between come together to engage in serious good fun and lively debate.
