There are 12 months in the Hindu lunar calendar which are spread over a total of 354 days. This differs from the solar calendar which has a total of 365 days. Thus there is a difference of 11 extra days between the solar and the lunar calendars. Every three years this difference adds up to a whole extra month, which is known as the Adhik or Purushottam Maas, according to Hindu mythology. On that note, let us look at some intriguing facts about Adhik Maas.

Interesting Facts About Adhik Maas

1. Adhik Maas or Purushottam Maas is a special period of time in the Hindu calendar. In 2015 the duration of Adhik Maas is from 17th June to 16th July. It is an extra lunar month which occurs once every three years, as mentioned in the Vasishtha Siddhanta.

2. Adhik Mass, also known as Purushottam Maas or Mal Maas is a time when people are advised not to perform ceremonies like annaprashan, naamkaran and grah pravesh. This is because the strength of the effects of the Navgrahas is quite strong during this time.

3. All the main Hindu months have a deity attached to them, but no one agreed to be the governing God of Mal Maas or the extra month. This is when Lord Vishnu decided to assign Adhik Maas to himself. That is why it is known as the Purushottam Maas.

4. It is a time for the purification of one’s mind, body and soul, and for their sins to be absolved. If someone is affected by a particular dosh (mainly related to any of the Navgrahas), the Purushottam or Adhik Maas is the ideal time to get rid of it.
