‘Cynical’ and ‘misguided’: India hits back at Pakistan for raising Kashmir at UN

UNITED NATIONS: India has sharply hit back at Pakistan at a high-level United Nations forum for misusing it to raise the Kashmir issue. CharacterisingPakistan as a country that “uses terrorism as state policy” and one that masquerades its use of terrorism as its “support for human rights”, India firmly dismissed Pakistan’s attempt as not having any resonance in the international community.

The sharp rebuke came from Syed Akbaruddin, India’s Permanent Representative at the UN, at the high-level thematic debate on human rights in the UN General Assembly. The high-level thematic debate on a host of issues are being held under the ‘UN@70’ banner.

Pakistan had raised the Kashmir issue at the debate on human rights earlier. Its envoy Maleeha Lodhi had called the killing of terrorist Burhan Wani, a commander of the Pakistan-backed terror outfit Hizbul Mujahideen, an “extra-judicial killing”. She also described the dead terrorist as a “Kashmiri leader”.

This drew a curt and sharp dressing down from India.
