“Cuckoo Sehgal has just outdone himself,” crooned one socialite, as she plucked another as the tray whisked by. “You know that’s true,” replied her friend and they eyed the sumptuous spread of hors d’ouerves off to one side, prepared by Bombay Brasserie, as was the dinner later that night.
So, where were the speeches after the hall opened up? Where were the drawn out acknowledgements? The long-winded guest speaker? “Not tonight,” replied Dr. Paul Mehta, who helped start the Punjabi Culture Club’s annual Lohri jabi Culture Club’s annual Lohri event almost 17 years ago. “We have held this event in other places, but for the past 15 years we have been right here in the Doubletree Hotel downtown.” And its always been the same: just an excuse to celebrate what is probably the first heart-warming event held in the cold January Northern Indian night: lohri, the celebration of the male child’s first passage through winter.
In that spirit, this lohri was full of dances by children and young adults alike, and songs to warm the heart. There were the wahji, bale-bale interruptions by the audience and the chanting of couplets by women in honor of the first young ones (whose parents chipped in the traditional bank notes into a small bag).
The lohri celebrations in North India always end with dances around a bonfire, and this one danced to the DJ till late night. On a serious note, the PCC was promoting a $2,000 Scholarship for High School, named in honor of the late Swadesh Khurana, for seniors starting college in the Fall 2009 and with at least parent of Indian origin. Silver Wedding Anniversary Surprise for the Pallods
By Kalyani Giri

HOUSTON: It was the perfect surprise party, skillfully planned and executed to the very minutest detail. Guests, in on the surprise, eagerly cooperated and gathered early in the cavernous foyer of the Magnolia Ballroom at the Safari Texas Ranch on a recent chilly January evening.
When the obviously unsuspecting couple of the day arrived, they were astonished to be greeted with a resounding “surprise!!!” from a gathering of familiar faces. For honorees Sushma and Vijay Pallod, it made for an unforgettable 25th Wedding Anniversary as they were hugged and feted by longtime friends, family, and wellwishers. The event, hosted by Kiran and Ramesh Bhutada, drew the participation and talents of many with a program replete with speeches, a hilarious skit that gently poked fun at the Pallods, and a big screen presentation of photographs that gave gatherees a glimpse of the Pallod family’s 25 years of togetherness.
Co-conspirators in helping orchestrate the surprise element were the Pallod children Kavita, Bharat, and Namita who lured their parents to the party. How did they do it without raising suspicion? They went the whole nine yards and produced a printed invitation to a fictitious event! Speakers included Vijay Pallod’s mentor Ramesh Bhutada, cousin Jugal Malani, and colleague Girish Naik. Resonating in all the spoken words were Sushma and Vijay’s selfless commitment to the community and of their commendable leadership qualities.
The Pallods are involved in the Maheshwari Mahasabha of North America and Sushma served as nationwide president of the organization. Vijay invests time tirelessly to Vishwa Hindu Parishad USA, Ekal Vidyalaya, Sewa International, and wherever he feels help is needed. He received the Indo American Chamber of Commerce of Greater Houston’s Community Service Award in 2007.
Kavita and Namita spoke movingly of their parents being wonderful role models, and through their simple words, showed how close-knit the Pallod family is. Son Bharat emerged as the undisputed star of the evening as he delivered a deadpan commentary on the photographs on the screen, drawing laughter through his witty observations. Dinner choices included Gujarati and Rajasthani dishes catered by Madras Pavilion, and an array of delectable desserts.

Performances by Divine Performing
Arts Add Enchantment to Christmas
By Jawahar Malhotra
HOUSTON: As the two emcees - the Anglo male explaining in English and the Chinese female in Mandarin - introduced the dances and singers, the audience in the packed Jones Hall was rapt with attention, from the opening ceremonial drummers performance.
In their 2009 World Tour , the Divine Performing Arts made a stop in Houston for two days of performances on December 22 and 23. The t roupe consists of vocal music and dance whose creative inspiration is traditional Chinese culture. Most members practise a form of selfcultivation called Falun Gong and some performances highlight the principles of this philosophy, both in the operatic songs and dances.
Both the performances of the tenor and soprano, accompanied by piano, soared to the high ceilings while the words flashed on the screen in Mandarin and English. The DPA troupe performed classical Chinese dance, with its intricate movements that date back millenia, as well as martial art based dances, like the Drum Dance, which was awe inspiring in it’s group choreography.
Classical Chinese Dance The program also included ethnic and folk dances from the distinctive ethnic groups and folk traditions that comprise China.
Each group typically has its own colorful dance techniques, dress, and music. Also part of the show were story- based dances, which are one of DPA’s trademarks, and explore a range of themes from both the ancient and modern world.
Audiences saw the heroism of China’s greatest general, Yue Fei; joined the legendary heroine Mulan, on her quest; and glimpsed the courage of Falun Dafa practitioners in China today. The music, by DPA’s own orchestra, was equally inspiring and well-played and conducted. DPA will visit several other cities on its American tour before returning to Taiwan.

Indian Couple Drowns in Lake
HOUSTON: Bodies of a couple, Joseph Mathai 61, and his wife Leelamma Mathai, 55 were recovered on Thursday, December 11 from the retention lake in the Lake Shore Harbour neighborhood in Missouri City.
Divers recovered the bodies from a submerged SUV on Thursday afternoon. The silver Toyota Highlander was found upright in about 20 feet of water, about 40 feet from the shore near a curve in Palm Harbour near their home.
The grim discovery came after a long search that was started with desperate 911 cell phone call at 3:30 am Wednesday from a woman said: “ Lake Shore Harbour!” During the call, the woman repeated “ the lake” as a 911 operator asked again for an address and why help was needed. At the end of the 3-minute call, the sound of rushing water could be heard and then the phone went dead.
On Thursday afternoon, searchers from Texas detected the vehicle using side scan sonar in a small boat. Houston divers soon confirmed that the bodies were inside the vehicle. The victims were taken ashore to a canopy erected by investigators and were then identified by family members. The bodies were subsequently taken to the Galveston County Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy. Its reported that the bodies of the couple has been sent to India early this week.

I have been asked numerous times

American candidate for judge. There
are two primary reasons why we
as a community should care about
the composition of our judiciary in
Texas. The reasons are: a) in a representative
democracy, our voice needs
to be heard; and b) judges make
decisions that impact our daily lives

H1B OK to Travel Abroad with Pending I-485
By Attorney Zainab Rizvi,
George R. Willy, P.C.
This article will help clarify a growing concern among certain H-1B nonimmigrants deciding to travel outside of the United States. For the most part, this is a viable option as long as such applicant complies with the statute set out in the Code of Federal Regulations, which will be discussed in further detail below.
For illustration purposes, imagine that an alien originally from Pakistan wanted to visit his home country to spend some quality time with his family. Furthermore, this alien maintains a valid H-1B nonimmigrant status and his adjustment of status is currently pending. Upon reentry to the U.S., what would his status be?
The law clearly states that a nonimmigrant on a valid H-1B as well (as nonimmigrants on L-1 visa) may travel outside the U.S. without advanced parole while their adjustment of status is pending (8 CFR 245.2 (a)(4)(ii)(C)). Specifically, H-1B nonimmigrants may be readmitted into the United States and resume the same status as long as the following requirements are met:
1) they remain eligible for H status;
2) they intend to resume employment with the same employer for whom they had previously been authorized to work as H-1 nonimmigrants; and
3) they are in possession of a valid H-1 nonimmigrant visa.
The same holds true for the alien dependants who are on lawful H4 status. Dependent family members on valid H4 status may also travel during the time the adjustment application (I-485) is pending as long as the above requirements for the H-1 principal are met.
H1-B nonimmigrants traveling abroad using their H visas instead of an advance parole document can reenter the U.S. and continue working for the same employer. It is worth mentioning that as of November 2007, it is no longer a requirement that the adjusted applicant possess the original I-485 receipt when returning to the U.S.
Thus, an individual maintaining a valid H-1 status and who has also applied for adjustment of status, can travel outside of the U.S. without abandoning their application.

Pakistan National Javed Iqbal Accused of Stealing Thousands in Houston
HOUSTON: A gas station employee has been accused of running up a big bill for the United States Postal Service, KPRC Local 2 reported Tuesday.
Javed Iqbal, 36, has been charged with unauthorized use of an access device.
Federal investigators said Iqbal, an employee at the Susser Chevron station in the 14000 block of the Eastex Freeway, made about $87,000 worth of fraudulent charges to the postal service between March and June.
Officials said Iqbal made the charges to the postal service’s Voyager card, a credit card used to buy gas for postal vehicles. Voyager is a commercial fleet card program with individual accounts assigned to each vehicle and a personal identification number for each employee.
Forty-five card numbers have been compromised, detectives said.
Investigators said the station submitted 815 separate charges for payment by the USPS, representing about 12 percent of the total charges for the Houston district. Officials said 194 of those transactions were entered manually, which was 79 percent of all the manually entered transactions in the USPS Houston district.
Many of the transactions were made when the employee with the corresponding PIN was either on leave or not on duty, investigators said.
Agents found a list of Voyager card numbers and PINs when they executed a search warrant at the store, officials said.
Iqbal was also found to be in possession of a stolen firearm, investigators said.

Yoga lessons for Congressmen in US
HOUSTON: Noted yoga guru Baba Ramdev, who recently laid the foundation stone for a USD 20 million yoga and ayurveda research centre here, has been invited by US Congressmen to display his yogic exercises before them.
Congressman Nick Lampson, who attended Ramdev’s five-day yoga camp held here, invited him to Washington DC.
Republican Lampson, whose congressional district includes Fortbend County where the yoga and research centre is being constructed, said the traditional Indian exercises can indeed benefit healthcare industry in USA.
The Houston centre, which will be based on the model of ‘Pathanjali Yog Peeth’ of Haridwar, founded by the yoga-exponent 15 years ago, has already raised over USD 5 million for the project, expected to be complete in 2009.
“When the Haridwar centre was established, Rs 20,000 was borrowed to start the project. But in Houston, one-fourth of the needed funds were raised on the very first day,” Ramdev said.
“Majority of the people in India cannot afford healthcare and rising costs of treatments, medicine and doctor visits and for those people yog will be a best alternative for having good health without paying anything,” said Ramdev, who wants to “revolutionize healthcare in India and around the world”.
The presence of a large Indian community prompted the spiritual guru to chose Houston as the place for establishing the centre, which will be set up in a sprawling 94-acre land in Rosenberg, about 25 miles from here.
The project includes a clinic to treat chronic ailments, a training centre for yog teachers, housing for active seniors and retirees, a herbal garden, retreat centre, vedic gurukul school for young children and a university.

The events at both the temples were a great success and exceeded most optimistic expectations. They attracted devotees from all parts of Houston and surrounding areas. There were in excess of 250 devotees who were mesmerized and awed by Swamiji’s impressive oratory and knowledge. God, the Supreme Soul, is the Universe and we are all part of or a reflection of that existence.
In the morning session, Swamiji’s discourse focused on Karma from Shri Bhagvad Gita. In the evening lecture his focus was on the importance of Self Realization. The core of both the discourses was simple; ‘Know Thyself’…and his techniques to attaining this knowledge are as vast as the ocean. According to the teachings of Swamiji one should attain Supreme Bliss, Knowledge & Salvation in this life, not after death.
His discourses were profound, simple, and yet concise which he explained with clear vision, love and great humor. Meeting and listening to Swamiji was a rare treat for all those who had the opportunity to attend the events.
Indian Missions to Help Jilted NRI Brides
NEW DELHI: The Indian government hopes to provide legal and financial assistance to women who have been deserted by their NRI husbands in foreign countries, and ensure their rehabilitation and repatriation. An inter-ministerial committee examined and accepted several such recommendations - made by the inter-ministerial sub-committee - at a meeting attended by Women and Child Development Minister Renuka Chowdhury and Overseas Affairs Minister Vyalar Ravi.
There was agreement over the sub-committee’s recommendation that provisions on serving notices and summons, and enforcement of maintenance orders be made part of mutual legal assistance treaties that are in the pipeline with different countries, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. “It will help women in states like Punjab and Kerala get their dues from their NRIs husbands, who have deserted them,” a WCD Ministry official said.
In normal circumstances, maintenance orders passed in Indian courts have little impact as they can’t be served to accused living abroad. Punjab alone accounts for over 15,000 women deserted by their NRI husbands.
The sub-committee also recommended that bilateral agreements be signed with other countries to protect victims of NRI marriages.
And that such agreements include provisions that a divorce order of a foreign court be effective only if endorsed by an Indian court, decrees of Indian courts be enforceable abroad and Indian women be allowed representation in the country where divorce petitions have been filed against them.
The WCD Ministry suggested these agreements be signed as soon as possible with those countries that have a large Indian diaspora. For abandoned NRI wives, the sub-committee wants Indian embassies to come up with funds for their legal assistance, rehabilitation and repatriation.
“The fund mechanism should be strengthened by engaging NGOs and NRI legal professionals to provide assistance,” the report says. It also recommends that the government ask foreign missions to ensure visa isn’t granted without a marriage certificate and social security number, if applicable; that fast track courts take up litigation related to NRI marriages; and that the Law Ministry issue appropriate circulars.

Indian Priest Allowed to Leave
US on $10 Million Guarantee
HOUSTON: A Hindu priest, arrested three weeks ago on charges of groping two children, has been permitted to visit India after a follower agreed to put up a whopping USD 10-million guarantee that he would return to the US.
Prakashanand Saraswati, 79, founder of the Barsana Dham centre in north Hays County in Texas-- one of the biggest Hindu temples in the US-- was released on a USD one million bail by District Judge Bill Henry last month.
Saraswati was indicted on 20 counts of indecency with two children between 1993 and 1996. He was arrested April 24 at Washington Dulles International Airport after he arrived on a flight from Europe, where he had been receiving treatment.
In an arrangement described as “unusual” by legal experts, Peter Spiegel, an entrepreneur listed as a managing member, director and treasurer of JKP, Barsana Dham, the corporate name of the temple founded by Saraswati, agreed to pay the massive guarantee money in an arrangement approved by State District Court Judge Charles Ramsay, the American Statesman reported on its website.
Saraswati retrieved his passport late last week, according to Hays County court records. A spokesman for Barsana Dham said the priest intends to visit India soon. District Attorney Sherri Tibbe said her office argued against permitting the priest to leave the country.
“We oppose anybody leaving the country who’s out on a felony bond,” she said.
According to other provisions of release, Saraswati was prohibited from entering Barsana Dham property at any time as the offences allegedly occurred there.
Barsana Dham owns more than 200 acres of land and its 35,000-square-foot temple, opened in 1995, attracts hundreds of worshippers every Sunday.
To Remain Hale, Just Inhale and Exhale: Swami Ramdev
To remain hale and healthy, just inhale and exhale. Do it yourself the way India’s venerated Yoga practitioner, Swami Ramdev, teaches. Then, you may breathe a sigh of relief from many ailments.
After creating a mass movement among people who follow his breathing exercises first in India and now world wide, both in person and through the popular cable television channel, Aastha, Swami Ramdev will now conduct five-day Yoga Science Camps in the U.S. and Canada in July and August.
An estimated 2,000 to 5,000 are expected to participate in the each of the 5-day camps daily from 6 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.
The camp will be held in Los Angeles from July 9 to July 13 at Anaheim Convention center, followed by the Houston camp at the George R. Brown Convention Center from July 16 to July 20.
From July 23 to 27, the camp will be held in Washington, D.C. at the Dulles Expo and Conference Center. Finally, Vancouver, Canada, will host the camp from July 30 to Aug. 3 at the Clovergale Rodeo and Exhibition Ground.
“Swami Ramdev performs no miracles, though anecdotes of people who have miraculously been cured of ailments are abundant. He does not criticize modern medicine nor does he cast himself in the role of an adversary to allopathy,” says Bhagwan Gambhir from Fort Lauderdale, trustee of Patanjali Yog Peeth in U.S. A. and Canada.
Swami Ramdev explains the science behind the breathing exercises as a mechanism to enrich the blood with life-giving oxygen and to release harmful carbon dioxide. In other words, his breathing technique enables the body to get ten times more oxygen than normal.
Swami Ramdev’s Divya Yog Mandir Trust and Patanjali Yogpeeth in Haridwar, India, are institutions for scientific research and treatment with Yoga, spiritualism and Ayurveda.
“The reason for the popularity of Swami Ramdev’s Yoga is that it’s not bound by gender, religion, status, caste, community or language. Anyone, whether a devotee or an atheist, an beginner or a accomplished practioner, a sick or healthy person, can benefit from it”, Gambhir says.
“A simple regimen of breathing exercises holds the key to a healthy human life, devoid of any ailments,”Swami Ramdev says.
Staying in good health is everyone’s birth right, Swami Ramdev believes. And he literally breathes a new life into millions of people.
You need no expensive equipment or strenuous preparation. Just be willing to follow the simple breathing techniques demonstrated by Swami Ramdev. There are no expensive prescriptions or side effects.
The entry pass for the five-day camp begins at $100 per person. The money raised from the camps will be used to fund Pathanjali Yogpeeth activities.

Metlife Provides Tips for Retirment Planning and IRAs
NEW YORK — With tax season coming to a close and rebate checks making their way to consumers, this is a great time to think about how the extra money can be used to begin planning for retirement.
An Individual Retirement Account (IRA) is one of many options MetLife offers clients when helping them plan for retirement and build financial freedom. Below are summaries of the different types of IRAs available to consumers:
Traditional IRAs are generally funded with deductible contributions (provided certain income limitations are met). The owner will not be subject to current income tax on the money he or she invests—or the earnings (e.g., interest, dividends, sales of stock, etc.) generated on that money. The owner will not be taxed until the funds are withdrawn, which is usually at retirement. If the funds are withdrawn before age 59 ?, a tax penalty may apply. Withdrawals will be taxed as ordinary income. Based on federal income tax rules, IRA holders must begin to receive certain required minimum distributions from their IRAs by April 1 of the year after they reach 70.
Roth IRA contributions can be made with after-tax dollars (subject to certain income limitations). This means that an individual’s contributions will not reduce his or her taxable income. Withdrawals are generally free of income tax, provided they are received no earlier than 5 years after the first contribution is made to the account and certain other conditions (e.g., reaching age 59 ? ) are met.
Spousal IRA contributions can be made for a spouse who does not work (subject to certain income limitations).
Education IRA or Coverdell Education Savings Account contributions can be made with after-tax dollars for beneficiaries under the age of 18 (subject to certain income limitations). The earnings (e.g., interest, dividends, sales of stock, etc.) generated on such contributions are not subject to current federal income tax. The earnings are also not subject to federal income tax when they are distributed, provided they are used to pay for certain education expenses of the beneficiary.
IRA-Based Retirement Plans. In addition to IRA plans that an individual might set up, some employers may have established IRA-based retirement plans for employees. Employer contributions to these plans enhance retirement savings.
For more information about how an IRA can help you build a secure financial future, visit www.metlife.com to find a local MetLife office.

Director Acharya Thrilled with Los Angeles Audience Award for His Film
MUMBAI — Director Manish Acharya is thrilled that his ‘Loins Of Punjab Presents’ walked away with the audience award at the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles (IFFLA) and says winning a ‘popular’ award is always great.
He received the prize at the festival last week, a year after his wacky and spunky comedy was released. Back in Mumbai, Acharya hasn’t yet gotten over the experience. It was shown at the prestigious Arclight Theatre on Sunset Boulevard. That in itself was a dream come true. The award was gratifying because the audience award is not selected by a handpicked jury. It’s a fully popular award given to the most popular film of the festival,” Acharya said.
‘Loins of Punjab Presents’ was about an NRI millionaire living in New Jersey who holds a singing contest for the local residents. It starred Shabana Azmi, Ayesha Dharker, Jameel Khan and Darshan Jariwala. The thought of a film about a desi music contest being watched by a predominantly American audience tickles the director.
“I’d rather have the most popular than the best film for ‘Loins Of Punjab’ ... There was just one show. And I had an inkling that my film would get it because the theatre was full and there were hordes who stood up and watched the film.,” he said.
“If you look at it, ‘Loins Of Punjab Presents’ is a very Indian subject. There’re dozens of characters singing 40 Bollywood songs. But the songs are not used in the traditional Bollywood formula. The Americans are watching my film as they’d watch any film about a flamboyant, demonstrative, passionate community like ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding’.”

Soul-Stirring Recital by Visiting Young Singer
By Kalyani Giri
HOUSTON – Thirteen-year-old Nayanthara Kosarasu from Chennai delivered a soul-stirring rendition of devotional songs at the Anjali Center this past weekend. A student of Chennai-based guru Mylapore Jayalakshmi, Nayanthara mesmerized her audience of music lovers with her wide repertoire of the compositions of Sri Tallapaka Annamacharya (1408-1503); the mystic saint composer of the 15th century was the earliest known musician of South India to compose songs called sankirtanas in praise of Lord Venkateswara, the deity of Seven Hills in Tirupati. IAA’s Special Mother’s Day Concert on May 11
HOUSTON — The Indo-American Association is presenting special Mother’s Day concert ‘Legacy: classical, folk and bollywood music of India’ on Sunday, May 11, at 6.00 p.m. at Wortham Center.
The concert is a journey through the rich spectrum of musical traditions of India including the classical, Bollywood, and folk music of various regions of India. It is also a journey through India’s soul since music best speaks the language of the eternal soul of a people.
There is a close connection between Indian classical ragas and folk music of India- many ragas evolved from folk tunes and many folk melodies owe their origin to classical ragas. For example, Raga Bhoplai evolved from folk songs to being a full fledged raga. In fact so universal is the appeal of this pentatonic raga that most Chinese and Japanese folk is also based on it. Raga Jhinjhoti is the bedrock of many of the folk songs of India.
And, although the common belief is that there is a disconnect between the classical music and the Bollywood, the fact remains that many of the popular film songs we have been humming all our lives are a ‘condensed’ rendition of a popular classical raga.
Hence, the theme of this unique instrumental concert featuring outstanding musicians!!
The concert will begin with a performance of Rag Bhopali showcasing how the raga evolved from folk songs. Next comes the scintillating piece Safar, a medley of folk music from many regions of India and popular songs from bollywood demonstrating that at the end of the day Indian music is all-inclusive and one in spirit.
After intermission the group renders Raga Jhinjhoti showcasing the passing on the legacy from generation to generation. The concluding Grand Finale, A Journey Within, strings together folk music from all the regions of India, including Rajasthani Mand, Punjabi folk, and Bhatiyali and Baul from Bengal.
The musicians in the ensemble include: Pandit Partha Chatterjee (sitar); Pandit Ramesh Mishra (sarangi), Pandit Anindo Chatterjee (tabla), Purbayan Chatterjee (sitar), Anubrata Chatterjee (tabla), and Houston’s own Shekhar Phatak (keyboards).
The Indo-American Association (IAA) is proud to have commissioned this special instrumental concert for exclusive performance in Houston for Mother’s Day.

Before the presentation, Arvin Shah told Indo-American News that India was the fastest growing market for Sky Bird with the annual growth rate averaging at 7 to 8 percent due mainly to the country’s booming economy and the increased international focus on India. As a result, Sky Bird was expanding its services in the subcontinent.

These fares are updated daily so that the agents can have the latest fares at their fingertips.

Medical Insurance for Incoming Visitors
HOUSTON - Do you have relatives and friends coming to the U.S.? If so, take a look at this. The United States has by far the most expensive health care system in the world.
The good news is that medical insurance can ensure you of receiving the best care available. The reasons for the especially high cost of health care in the U.S. is attributed to a number of factors, ranging from the rising costs of medical technology and prescription drugs to the high administrative costs resulting from the complex multiple payer system in the US. If a visiting friend or loved one goes down with an unexpected ailment, do they have medical coverage?
Visitor Medical Insurance is reasonably priced and makes good sense. Here are a few facts: The initial cost associated with a stroke or heart attack averages $15,000 in hospital charges. Physician fees, anesthesia, drugs, and supplies are additional expenses that push the initial cost of stroke or heart attack to over $25,000. The average hospital room alone costs $212. per day. The average cost for an emergency room visit is over $600.; for people ages 45 to 64 the average emergency room visit is almost double that amount. Average costs for other medical problems can be found easily on the internet. The bottom line is that it is expensive.
The insurance may be purchased in advance or once the visitor arrives. You may purchase the insurance on behalf of another person. No medical exam is required. The visitor insurance policies do not cover pre-existing conditions. Coverage can accommodate any timeframe from daily rates to annually renewable plans. Full Armor represents several of the most respected insurance carriers in the world including IMG and AIG.

Lawmakers Urge
More Visas for
Foreign Workers
WASHINGTON - Three House members pleaded Wednesday for more visas for seasonal workers they said are needed immediately by seafood processors, resorts and other businesses in their districts.
Some of those operations could close or lose a lot of money this spring and summer because there are not enough visas, known as H-2B visas, for the temporary nonagricultural workers they need, the lawmakers told the House Judiciary immigration subcommittee.
“Not having H-2B workers will significantly affect the businesses within my district and their ability to keep a professional, trained and dependable work force,” said Rep. Bart Stupak, D-Mich. He was joined by Rep. Tim Bishop, D-N.Y. and Rep. Wayne Gilchrest, R-Md.
Prospects for relief are uncertain. Attempts to increase H2B visas are trapped in the debate over immigration reform. House negotiations on the issue and a pending immigration enforcement bill broke down before the Easter recess.
Supporters of a more sweeping immigration bill oppose the piecemeal approach, while opponents of guestworker programs argue it would hurt American workers.
