HOUSTON: Well-known Indo American attorney Bashisht Sharma announced last week his candidacy for the 178th Judicial District Court in Harris County. Sharma said that he had mulled over the idea for some time and made his final decision a few weeks ago, according to his wife Indira who is helping to manage the campaign.

The court is located at 1201 Franklin Street in Houston and is currently presided over by Judge David Mendoza who oversees a staff of seven, with five prosecutors assigned to it.

Sharma will be running as a Republican in the March 1 Primary with a slate of three attorneys. The general election will be held on Tuesday, November 8, 2016.

“A judge should be a fair and firm referee.  I believe that every person deserves to be fairly and zealously represented by competent counsel, and I believe in our Justice system, which protects such rights,” said Sharma.

Sharma received a Bachelor of Science in Economics in May 1991 from the University of Houston and then went on to get a Juris Doctorate in December 1993 from the University of Oklahoma. He has been an attorney and litigator since March 1994 in his own firm, Sharma & Associates, P. C. in northwest Houston. He is married to Indira Sharma who is the firm’s office manager and accountant. They have four children:  Gainda Sharma, JD, Sharda Sharma, JD, CPA, and Mala Sharma, JD who are all attorneys and have joined their father’s firm; and Vhada Sharma, MD, a physician.

Sharma has been involved with many legal associations and community non-profits and is also an Equestrian Ranger at Houston’s George H. Bush Intercontinental Airport.
