HOUSTON: Indo-American Political Action Committee (IAPAC) of Greater Houston is the political voice of Indo-Americans of Greater Houston and continues it’s endeavour to provide an interface between Indo Americans and various city, county, state and federal agencies.

Recently, IAPAC, as part of it’s outreach program, along with Hindus of Greater Houston, reached out to various heads of City Police Departments and the Harris County Sherriff’s Office and introduced them to the Hindu tradition and practice of Raksha Bandhan and it’s significance.

Harris County Sherriff, Adrian Garcia, HPD Asst. Chief and Head of the Asian Advisory Board for HPD, John Chen and Missouri City Police Chief Joel Fitzgerald were prompt in their response and invited sisters to visit with them to tie the Raakhi on behalf of the Hindu Community of Greater Houston.

Manisha Mehta & Preanka Desai tied a raakhi to Sheriff Adrian Garcia and Asst. Chief Chen while Dr. Iswari Murthy and Mala Rao tied a raakhi to Chief Joel Fitzgerald.

The sisters were welcomed on behalf of the Hindu Community of Greater Houston and were promised continued protection by their adopted brothers. Asst. Chief Chen in his response made a statement “It is such a beautiful tradition.” All three were recounted stories related to Raksha Bandhan and how the practice transcended all religion. IAPAC will continue it’s efforts to introduce the various leaders of Greater Houston to the diverse cultures of Indo Americans.
