HOUSTON: About 90 people gathered at Nirvana Restaurant on Wednesday, February 8, when the IIT Alumni of Greater Houston kicked off its 2012 season with its first event about “How Market Linked Investments can Impact a Portfolio’s Performance” sponsored by Merrill Lynch. The event started with a social hour over cocktails, followed by about an hour of presentations by Merrill Lynch’s team of professionals. Dinner and drinks were compliments of the sponsors.

Following a welcome note and introduction by the newly elected president Witty Bindra, David Raj, a financial advisor with Merrill Lynch and an IITAGH trustee gave insights on managing wealth and caring for the family, preparing for retirement, estate planning, and discovering strategies for growing small businesses.

Other financial advisors with Merrill Lynch, Pradeep Gokhale and Asheet Yagnik, then shared their experience in customized wealth and liability management, and adjustable rate mortgage. They told the audience that before any financial decisions are made, they consider their clients’ entire life, taking the time to fully understand who they are, and what matters to them most as individuals and as business professionals. With this intimate knowledge, they are able to help people establish objectives, develop an appropriate strategy, and recommend solutions that draw upon the breadth and depth of their experience, to connect all the pieces of their financial lives.

Finally, Merrill Lynch Vice President Ryan Rouse spoke about how market linked investments can impact a portfolio’s overall return. He also touched upon investing in overseas markets like Europe and India. The Merrill Lynch team then opened the floor for questions.

In his note of thanks to the sponsors and the attendees, Bindra expressed that “the spirit of responsibility and affection imbibed among the attendees … made this event most endearing. Whether young or old, all participated in the discussion during the presentation and shared their respective life experiences over the dinner table.” He also emphasized the need for volunteer participation, “which really makes events such as this one a great success.”

IITAGH has several events planned for the year, including a Professional Development Panel Discussion on March 31, a “Rock for Charity” concert on April 7, a Spiritual Talk on May 5, and a Children’s Play and the Annual Picnic in October.
