Dr Shafique Keshavjee, a thoracic surgeon of Indian origin who has years of experience at the forefront of innovative research into lung transplantation, saved a young mother’s life with what is believed to be the world’s first radical procedure.

Melissa Benoit, 32, was born with cystic fibrosis and had developed a rampaging lung infection that spread throughout her body.
