Red alert in Arunachal over possible disaster

ITANAGAR: The Arunachal Pradesh government on Tuesday sounded a red alert after a massive landslide blocked the flow of the Polo river atPolosang a week ago, leading to reverse flow of water towards China. Experts say a disaster may take place if the debris blocking the river are breached.
Meanwhile, a report from the district said three minor girls of Lower Lichella village were washed away by the floodwaters of the Kurung river on Sunday and a search operation had been launched to locate them.
Polo is the major tributary of Kurung River in Sarli circle of the remote Kurung Kumey district in Arunachal Pradesh.  If the rubble is breached, the floodwaters may wreak havoc downstream and there is a high possibility of washing away of the log and wire suspension bridges used by the ITBP, SIB and SSB personnelfor border patrolling along China, besides destroying villages.
Chief secretary Hari Krishna Paliwal and disaster management secretary Kapa Kholie alerted disaster management director Y W Ringu, who passed on the message to Kurung Kumey DC and SP, to take steps to evacuate the people living in the lower belt of the Kurung river, a source said….
