HOUSTON: The Sewa International Houston chapter celebrated an important milestone on August 1, as the end of their summer programs for youth and college volunteers came to a close. Sewa hosted an end of summer gala to celebrate the summer graduates of the Get Inspired Houston (GIH) and Lead Houston internships, with the GIH internship offering college students an experience to intern and experience first hand the many opportunities involved in working in the non-profit scene in Houston and the Lead Houston internship offering a similar version catered towards high school students. GIH interns were able to work in a variety of areas from Children’s activity to PR to Grant writing. While Lead Houston focussed on developing socially conscious leadership in young adults. Both internships were centered this summer around the Aspire Tutorials program run by Sewa that helps tutor and encourage educational development for refugee children in underdeveloped communities.
Sewa most recently won a $25,000 grant from State Farm to spur the growth of Aspire Tutorials and worked with its interns to open up its second Aspire Tutorials center in the San Marcos apartments. Interns also had the opportunity to work closely with children at the Aspire Tutorials branch in the Los Arcos apartments center which has operated successfully for over a year, with children coming frequently to get a better grip on their studies in math, english, sciences, and technological skills. Interns also had the opportunity to meet distinguished leaders in the community and hear inspirational stories about their fields of work and how they worked towards success in their respective fields and professions.
The gala celebrated the many accomplishments of the interns throughout the summer who not only volunteered their time and commitment to the Aspire Tutorials program, but also partook in various leadership building activities and opportunities that helped them become more confident, giving, and responsible individuals.
