1000 Lights for Peace
HOUSTON: Mahatma Gandhi Library of Houston proudly invites one and all to join the “1000 Lights for Peace” program on Saturday, October 4. The ceremonies will be held at the beautiful Jones Plaza in downtown Houston.
Mahatma Gandhi’s values and philosophy of Non Violence, Peace and Service to humanity have proven to be exemplary models and resulted in profound world change. In recognition of the wisdom and effectiveness of Gandhi’s approach and teachings, Mahatma Gandhi Library, in cooperation with more than 100 organizations, celebrates Mahatma Gandhi Week each year. The mission is to increase public awareness, especially among youth, of his philosophy and the universal values of Truth, Non Violence, Service and Love.
Activities during “Mahatma Gandhi Week” have included the airing of “A Force More Powerful” by KUHT, Channel 8, a traveling exhibit titled “Gandhi Darshan”, Glimpses of Gandhi, (displayed at area libraries, schools and churches), Field Trips for children, Storytelling sessions by Professional Storytellers from Houston Storytellers Guild, a city wide poster, multimedia, essay and speech contest for middle and high school students and numerous other activities.
Mahatma Gandhi Week will culminate with “THOUSAND LIGHTS FOR PEACE” celebrations at Jones Plaza on Saturday, October 4, in commemoration of Gandhi Jayanti (Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday).
The day will begin with a Walk for Peace starting at 5:45pm at Jones Plaza. The 1000 Lights for Peace program will begin at 7 pm and will feature multi-cultural performances and an awards ceremony recognizing the diligent efforts of the individual contest winners. The evening’s festivities will culminate with a grand finale including the lighting of a candle by each individual as his/her pledge for peace and non- violence.
For the past several years, well over 1500 participants and many dignitaries have attended 1000 Lights for Peace.
