Vasudeva Nanayakkara Minister of National Languages and Social Integration

HOUSTON: At the invitation of the Asia Society of Houston, Sri-Lankan Minister of National Languages and Social Integration, Vasudeva Nanayakkara, will deliver a speech, ‘Road Map to Healing and Reconciliation in Sri-Lanka’, at the Asia Society’s auditorium in Houston at 7:00 pm on October 8.  Dr. Bandula Wijay, the Honorary Consul General for Sri-Lanka in the State of Texas, is hosting the Minister during his visit. The speech will be followed by a Q&A session from the audience, moderated by George R. Willy, a prominent immigration attorney and a Sri-Lankan Tamil American living in Houston. The free event will be open to the public.

Minister Nanayakkara is a senior cabinet member of the Sri-Lankan government and a close friend of the Sri-Lankan President, His Excellency Hon. Mahinda Rajapakse. The two of them have travelled a long political road together as soul mates. Minister Nanayakkara earned his LLB from the University of Peradeniya, Sri-Lanka and practiced law until he dedicated his life to politics in mid-1970s.

Minister Nanayakkara started his political career in the 1950s as an active member of the Samasamaja Youth Movement and soon became its leader. In 1970 he entered Parliament for the first time and has since been elected to Parliament several times. He is an uncompromising champion of the rights of minorities. He has been beaten, jailed and forced underground for his political activism. His activism, compassion and fearless honesty have won the hearts of the working class and minority communities.
