Ex-Attorney Loses Death Sentence Appeal in Penn. Shooting

Harrisburg, Penn. — An unemployed immigration attorney lost an appeal Aug. 5 of his conviction and death sentence for shooting to death five people during a 2000 attack that targeted ethnic minorities, who included Anil Thakur, then 31, at an Indian grocery store, in western Pennsylvania.
The high court’s 60-page opinion ruled against the appeal of Richard Baumhammers, currently on death row for the two-hour rampage. He also shot a sixth man, Sandip Patel, the manager of the Indian grocery story and then 25, who was left paralyzed and has since died….
