HOUSTON: Although they hold their monthly meetings at the Bayland Community Center the first Saturday of each month, this particular occasion had a special meaning as Club 65 gave all the ladies an early Mother’s Day celebration.
About 70 people came to the lunch event which featured a melodious opening song by newcomer to Houston, Dr. Parvin Saiyed with organizer and emcee Rahat Kalle gamily standing by. Club 65’s first and oldest lifetime member, my mother Shakuntala Malhotra was asked to give blessings at the start of the program and remarked that “In India, every day is Mother’s Day, we don’t need a special day.”
Children of volunteers sang a couple of numbers, then Fateh Ali Chatur showed his humorous wit as did another elderly gentleman who drew out many chuckles and laughs. Gary Iyer from Morgan Stanley Wealth Management accompanied his colleague Karl Kuenning from Nationwide Insurance to give a presentation on Long term Care and also sponsored the pizza, lasagna and salad lunch for the gathering.
In an accompanying room, the Indian Muslims Association of Greater Houston President Latafath Hussain convened a meeting of the Board and unveiled the newly formed Advisory Board, introducing its members. The roundtable discussion of their professions and passion for community mindedness made it clear that it drew them all together for a common cause.
