New York Mayor Bill de Blasio has nominated Raja Rajeswari, an assistant district attorney in the Richmond County District Attorney’s office in Staten Island, N.Y., as a criminal court judge in New York.

She is believed to be the first Indian American from Staten Island to be nominated to the bench, the Staten Island Advocate reported.

“I was honored and humbled by the appointment,” she told silive.com. “It’s like a dream. It’s way beyond what I imagined.”

Rajeswari, 43, moved to Staten Island from a small town in southern India when she was 16.

“For someone like me, an immigrant who comes from India, I’m beyond grateful,” she told silive.com. “I told the mayor this is not only my American dream, but it shows another girl from a far-away country that this is possible.”

A resident of Pleasant Plains, N.Y., Rajeswari has worked at the district attorney’s office for the last 16 years and has been deputy chief of the special-victims unit for more than four years.
