Priyanka Chopra’s father, Dr Ashok Chopra, lost a prolonged battle with cancer and breathed his last at a suburban hospital on Monday afternoon. Dr Chopra, 62, had retired from the Indian Army in 1997 as a lieutenant colonel and was ill for quite a long time.

In the morning the actress had posted a picture collage of her father on Twitter. Anurag Basu, the director who is a cancer survivor and a close friend of Priyanka, who was present at the crematorium, said, “Having gone through the same illness, I realise how draining cancer can be. More than the obvious physical complexities, it is mentally challenging. I was there last night by Mr. Chopra. He fought a tough battle. But since it was a relapse, it was increasingly tough to tackle. Priyanka has stood like a rock by her father. I’m not worried for her. She’s extremely strong as a person …my prayers are with the Chopra family.” …
