Rasaanubhava’15: Abhinaya School Student Showcase

HOUSTON: Colors, patterns and the joy for dancing was evident of Rasaanubhava’15, the annual student showcase of Abhinaya School of Performing Arts, at the Kaplan Theater,JCC Houston on May 17, 2015.

The artistic director and teacher Indrani Parthasarathy, is well versed in the Pandanallur style of Bharathanatyam and also trained in Kuchipudi style of dancing.She is the daughter of the dance Guru Karnataka Kalathilaka Smt.Radha Sridhar of Bangalore. Indrani has to her credit more than 150 solo performances and has been a performer in India, UAE and USA and has been a part of her mother’s dance drama productions. Indrani established the Abhinaya School of Performing Arts in 2001 which is originally based in Katy has now has grown and has branches in Cypress and Pearland.

The annual recital began part one featuring with the junior student performances – Nrithya Namaskaram. Anupama Nagasimha, teacher, welcomed the guests and introduced the dances. The junior students then presented a neatly synchronized performance maintaining their lines and formations. Besides performing classical portions dances they had learnt over the year they also performed dances specially choreographed to popular folk and fusion numbers. The students performed with fervor and confidence in their coordinated costumes.

The senior segment Nrithya Nivedanam – a tribute to  deities began 4:30 pm. Emceed by B.Sheshadrivasan from Bangalore, India, the senior recital had an array of beautifully choreographed traditional classical dances like Mallari, Shabdam, Varnam, Jathiswaram,Bhajan Keerthanams, Devaranama, Abhang and Thillana. This was followed by dances choreographed to Indian contemporary musical pieces like Malhar, Dhirana, A piece for peace and Amruthavarshini. The finale was a presentation called Rangoli which featured dances choreographed to popular semi-classical and folk movie songs carefully selected to suit the classical theme of the performance.  The joy for dancing was evident on the faces of the students as they performed. The recital ended with a happy note about the student performances by Artistic director Indrani Parthasarathy.
