Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna’s disappointment of semi-final loss against Venus Williams and Rajeev Ram carried into the bronze medal match against Radek Stepanek and Lucie Hradecka of Czech Republic with the Indian pairing bowing out tamely in just over an hour by 1-6, 5-7. The loss means India’s medal-less run at Rio continued with bronze medal also out of hopes.

Mirza and Bopanna had a miserable serve in the match with the pair down 5-0 in the first set before they finally got on the board with Bopanna holding serve from 15-40 down.

The second set was bit more even with Indian pair breaking the Hradecka serve to go 3-1 up after Mirza sent booming forehands into the back of the court and a cross-court winner clinched the break of serve. However, their serve was broken back immediately with Mirza sending her volley wide. The teams continued to hold serves with chances popping up in between but none were taken until the 11th game.
