Presented by Houston Mayor Annise Parker, this award recognizes Sewa’s monthly community service activities known as Sewa Local Events. From July 2012 Sewa International, Houston has been offering its volunteers a chance to impact in their community and bring forth positive change. These opportunities are known as Sewa Local Events and are aimed at addressing various concerns in our community: homelessness, refugee assistance, hunger, and improving the environment. Through Sewa Local Events, over 120 volunteers have committed their time serving various local organizations including the Houston Food Bank, Texas Children’s Hospital, Star of Hope Mission, Habitat for Humanity, and the Houston Zoo. Sewa Local Events is about experiencing the joy of serving others, and as such, Sewa strives to provide these opportunities for their volunteers every month.
Along with Sewa Local Events Sewa also operates additional full-fledged programs includingRefugee Empowerment, Family Services, and their internship opportunities. Through Refugee Empowerment, Sewa provides supplementary academic assistance to youth while also teaching vocational skills to refugee adults. Family Services is Sewa’s newest initiative wherein social support and a helping hand is provided to families during times of need.
