Sri Srinivasan was sworn in June 18 as a judge for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, the second most powerful court in the U.S. after the Supreme Court. He won confirmation to the post on a vote of 97-0 by the U.S. Senate.

“You all made it possible,” the 46-year-old Srinivasan said at a reception hosted by Indian Ambassador to the U.S. Nirupama Rao. “I am incredibly honored and humbled by the tremendous support you have given me,” he added.

Rao said Srinivasan is an example of the “extraordinary” accomplishments of Indian Americans in the U.S. She said she hopes soon that there will be an Indian American representative on the Supreme Court.

Described by President Barack Obama as a “trailblazer,” Srinivasan was initially nominated to the D.C. court June 11, 2012. The nomination was returned to President Obama Jan. 2, 2013, due to sine die adjournment of the Senate. Obama re-nominated him to the same post Jan. 3, 2013.

From 2011-2013, the Chandigarh-born Srinivasan was the principal deputy solicitor of the U.S. and argued 25 cases before the Supreme Court.

Before that, he was chair of the Supreme Court and appellate practice group at the law firm of O’Melveny & Myers, assistant to the U.S. Solicitor General and lecturer in law at the Harvard Law School.

Srinivasan served as a law clerk to Justice Sandra Day O’Connor on the U.S. Supreme Court and Judge J. Harvie Wilkinson III on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. He has a J.D. from Stanford Law School, an MBA from the Stanford School of Business and a B.A. from Stanford University.
