Letting the pay raise become law, he said, would “diminish the people’s confidence in government.” Read more Read more..

Houston Residents Upset Over Quran Distribution

HOUSTON: The distribution of Qurans in a southwest Houston neighborhood has some residents worried about the motives of the group who dispersed the Islamic book.

An English translation of the Quran began appearing two weeks ago on the doorsteps of hundred of homes in the BraesTimbers neighborhood. The books came in plastic bags with a note attached from the ‘Book of Signs Foundation’ asking recipients to accept the Quran as a gift from the Muslim community.

But some residents, like Greg and Sue Ann Pieri, said they feared the group is imposing its beliefs on non-Muslims and found the gesture offensive.

“If we went into a Muslim country and left a bible, we would be in prison and then decapitated a few years later,” said Sue Ann Pieri, who chose not to destroy the book like other neighbors did.

However, Houston’s Council on American-Islamic Relations President Tarick Hussein said although his organization did not partake in distributing the books, he believes that the Muslims behind the distribution only wanted to educate non-Muslims about the religion.

The Book of Signs Foundation claims to have distributed 30,000 Qurans in Houston, targeting neighborhoods believed to be most receptive of the Quran or in need of a better understanding of Islam.

Hundreds March in India for Gay Rights

The Indian Penal Code contains a colonial-era provision known as Section 377, which prohibits sexual activity that is “against the order of nature.” The statute carries punishment of up to 10 years in prison.

The law has been repealed in other former British colonies. Human rights groups, in a challenge at the Delhi High Court, are asking the judges to declare that India’s law does not apply to consenting adults. The court is set to hear arguments this week.

“In India, gays and lesbians still live highly closeted lives,” said Vikram Doctor, 40, a member of the Queer Media Collective.

“There is still violence. There are still many desperate suicides by gay couples. There is still harassment. And there is still intense pressure to marry those they do not want to be with. But today we have a voice. This march has taken on a momentum of its own.”

Mohinder Kaur told reporters that Gony was being instigated by his in-laws.

“I am pained to tell my plight through media and that too about my own son. Shortly before he left for Asia Cup in Pakistan, Manpreet along with a few of his relatives from his in-laws side came to my house and threatened to kill me,” Mohinder Kaur told reporters at her house in Mohali.

“After the IPL was over and before the Asia Cup, he came to the house and took away his belongings and tried to beat me up,” she further alleged.

India Cannot Help Egypt in its Nuke Programme

CAIRO: India expressed its inability to have nuclear cooperation with Egypt as New Delhi is not a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

“India cannot cooperate with any country in nuclear matter as we are not signatory to the NPT,” visiting External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee told reporters emerging from a 90-minute meeting with his Egyptian counterpart Abul Gheit.

Mukherjee was asked whether India can help Egypt in pursuing its civilan nuclear programme. He said India is “deprived” of having any nuclear trade with any country. Egypt, which is a signatory to the NPT, had last year announced its desire to have a civilian nuclear programme.
